Coaches are always trying to find the right way on how to coach kids using balance of pushing their athletes and helping them develop their own intrinsic motivation.

Today we are featuring Part 4 of a series of interviews with Raven Magwood, a teenage author, motivational speaker, and TV talk show host.

In this video, Raven shares with us how she dealt with the high expectations of her coaches and the types of goals and expectations she set for herself.

Have you ever had a difficult coach? I have had coaches who have really pushed me and set high expectations on me. When I was younger, I did not understand it.

“Why is the coach pushing me so hard? Why do they have such high expectations?”

That developed me as a person. One day I woke up and said, “No one’s expectations in my life are going to be higher than my own.”

Now, I live my live by that. I set such high expectations for myself and I push myself because no one is going to come into my life and say, “I think you should do this or I expect you to do that,” because I already expect it that from myself.

I expect myself to be a positive person, a good person to achieve all my goals.

It might have been difficult at the time being ten years old, eleven years old, having a coach push you so hard and set such high expectations.

Now in my life, I can set those high expectations for myself.

My brother is a football player and I would see it with him. I know a lot of people who are involved in sports. Coaches do not waste their time on people they do not see that potential in.

You hear all the time, “The coach is always ragging me. He always got something to say. He is always correcting me.”

I look at them and say, “Most of the time,
99.9% of the time, they care. They want to see that potential in you come out.”

Take it as they care and they want to see you successful, and want that for yourself. That is how you are going to be successful.
